Quicksilver control, By

This controller really sucks by design. The engineers who designed this should be fired. I have told other people that this is the worst mechanical design of anything that I have ever seen. For example, I have this controller on my center console and it is readily apparent that it is not waterproof as water splashes into the controller it flows down the control cables thereby rusting them. Unfortunately, it is seemingly the only replacement controller. If I were Mercury I’d choose not to outsource this component as it is a bad representation of Mercury engineering. Thanks Mercury/Quicksilver for cutting costs. When I am stranded out in the middle of a storm in the ocean with a broken throttle cable I’ll think of you. For safety’s sake, I’d gladly pay double or triple to have some semblance of quality.

New is not always better,

I purchased a new 60 hp Mercury 4-stroke to replace a worn out 40 hp Mariner. I requested all new cables, controls, and gauges. The new control unit was assembled in Mexico. It is less than two years old. It is already corroded and has a short in the alarm horn. It shifts rough and the throttle is poorly responsive. There is no waterproof cover for the wiring harness. The motor and controls were installed by a certified 5-star Mercury dealer. My “identical unit” was over ten years old and never malfunctioned. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. I will replace it with a Teleflex unit from Amazon. This is my fifth and last Mercury outboard. |
